Although all medical specialties have come under scrutiny for financial conflicts of interest, the field of psychiatry has been at the epicenter of this "crisis of credibility." Professor Cosgrove's work addresses the problems and ethical dilemmas that arise in the mental health field (especially in psychiatry) when there are financial ties between the pharmaceutical industry and researchers or professional organizations. Her research teams have conducted studies examining the type and extent of financial associations between authors of psychiatric diagnostic and treatment guidelines and the pharmaceutical industry. Her most recent work includes an examination of the relationship between antidepressant use and breast and ovarian cancer and researchers’ financial associations with industry. Arguing that transparency is an insufficient solution, she and her colleagues have offered policy-based recommendations based on their empirical work. Ongoing research includes an examination of the gaps in the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA’s) disclosure policy for DSM-5; a review of the iatrogenic harms of second and third generation antidepressants and implications for informed consent practices; and a critical appraisal and quality assessment of APA's practice guidelines on depression. Professor Cosgrove is also interested in promoting critical thinking in relation to psychiatric diagnosis and students interested in bias in psychiatric diagnosis and treatment, women’s health issues, or ethics would be welcome to join her lab.
