Comprehensive assessment of the freshwater resources of the world

At its Second Session in 1994, the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) called for a comprehensive assessment of current and future freshwater resources, needs and problems. The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) was commissioned by the Swedish Government to assume the Swedish responsibilities for preparing the assessment together with United Nations organizations. The report will be organized into four chapters: 1. A statement explaining the need for such an assessment; 2. A description of the availability, quality and variability of freshwater resources of the world and the use to which they are put at present; 3. An investigation of current and future water needs and the problems that must be faced at the global, regional and national levels; 4. Strategies and options for the sustainable development of freshwater resources of the world.
