Abstract

Time use data can be very useful for measuring and understanding labour force participation, employment, and unemployment. It also has certain advantages over conventional household survey data in shedding light on these phenomena, and thereby facilitating research and informing policy. This chapter explains how the Indian Time Use Survey conducted in 1999 is organized and how it can be used to understand labour force participation, employment, and unemployment in India. It also shows how time use data can shed light on gender differences and how education and work interact with each other.
