Abstract

A previous version of the paper implied that the SARS-CoV-2 virus originated in a market in China’s Wuhan province which was the predominant hypothesis at the time. The updated sentence is copied below: ‘‘The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus that first emerged in December of 2019, has become an unprecedented worldwide emergency.’’ The Royal Society of Chemistry apologises for these errors and any consequent inconvenience to authors and readers.
